The Distance Plan

2015 Summer Artist in Residence

The Distance Plan

HOLA is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the Distance Plan this summer.  The Distance Plan is a collective of artists who work on creative projects that promote the discussion of climate change within the arts and by extension a vision of just and sustainable communities for us all.

The most sustainable places to live are high density areas with access to public transport and quality green space — places just like the South Rampart/ MacArthur park! The broader goal of Cool and Connected: Our parks, Our Neighborhood, is to use art to celebrate the sustainable things about this unique area of Los Angeles and the community that calls it home. This project is a collaboration between three artists that are Distance Plan members — Joe Hoyt, Amy Howden-Chapman and Neil Doshi. Each bring their own skills to the residency.

The Distance Plan’s residency at HOLA started by getting to know each other, and talking about climate change and the most sustainable kinds of cities and neighborhoods. Places just like HOLA’s neighborhood of Rampart/ Mac Arthur Park. As a medium density neighborhood with lots of access to green space and public transport, its a great place to talk about sustainability. With The Distance Plan’s summer residency goal in mind of documenting features that make the MacArthur Park /Rampart neighborhood interesting as a high density part of the city, we drew apartment buildings surrounding Lafayette Park.
